Overview of Estonian e-Health ecosystem
Innovative e-solutions have revolutionised Estonia’s healthcare system. Each person in Estonia that has visited a doctor has an online e-Health record that can be tracked. Identified by the electronic ID-card, the health information is kept completely secure and, at the same time, accessible to authorised individuals. KSI Blockchain technology is being used to ensure data integrity and mitigate internal threats to the data. Also, secure data exchange layer X-Road and the overall Estonian digital public administration has made Estonia as one of the leading e-health innovators in Europe
Hospital information system
Helmes is a custom software development company with clients across the world. They focus on business-critical solutions that are created with world-class efficiency. Helmes has been developing e-health solutions for a decade, for example, digital prescription software, the e-school health solution, and a hospital info system.
The hospital information system consists of 20+ modules, from online booking to resource management and surgery planning systems. This mission-critical solution helps save lives in the largest hospital in Estonia, NEMC (North Estonian Medical Centre).
Nortal has developed nearly a third of the Estonian e-government solutions and is considered a global digital transformation force reaching both sides of the Atlantic with 19 offices in the US, Europe, and the Middle East. In the e-health field, Nortal has over 15 years of experience in digital healthcare solutions on a national scale as well as working with individual hospitals and medical institutions in both Europe as well as in the Middle-East.
For instance, Nortal recently launched an e-Prescription pilot in the federal state of Hessen in Germany as part of a bid to foster digital transformation in the country’s healthcare system.
eAmbulance allows emergency personnel to access patients’ medical records and makes the emergency reporting more efficient. Idea is that different eHealth services are connected to one big data pool, where the basic information, medical history and population register data of all Estonian citizens are collected. Different digital solutions and medical personnel can connect to this data and fetch data from there and push data in.
The process starts from call to Emergency Call Center (112)
Ambulance doctor enters emergency case data during emergency treatment using eAmbulance Mobile Workstation (iPad)
Doctor can enquire online time-critical data of the patient and past medical history from Healthcare Information System (HIS) on-site. From HIS the doctor gets prefilled ambulance card with the patient’s information
Doctor sends Emergency visit summary (call reports) to HIS with completed ambulance card
Patient arrives to hospital, hospital can enquire these documents from HIS beforehand
Healthcare data security
With offices in Tallinn, Estonia, and Lausanne, Switzerland, Guardtime has built different enterprise products ranging from Telecom, Health, Cyber Range & Exercises, and even Space. They have fashioned its KSI blockchain technology to support a real-world data (RWD) solution.
The RWD solution enables sensitive healthcare data to be used in clinical trials and personalized medicine in an aggregated, anonymised way without breaching privacy rules.
