World’s #1 in cybersecurity meets peak convenience: Estonia just dropped its government-in-your-pocket app.
Estonia, often dubbed the world’s most advanced digital society, has made its e-government services even more accessible. Now, most of its features for private individuals are available through a new mobile app.
Estonia’s Information System Authority (RIA) launched a mobile application for the Eesti.ee state portal on Monday, December 9. The app brings nearly 50 government services directly to users’ mobile phones. It is currently available in Estonian and English.
Users can now access several key services through their mobile devices, including:
- Viewing personal data and information about minor children
- Accessing prescriptions
- Receiving state mailbox notifications
- Managing owned or operated vehicles
- Reporting maintenance issues to local governments
According to Justice and Digital Affairs Minister Liisa Pakosta, per ERR, while the app is now live, one crucial feature is still pending: the ability to use it as an official identification document. This functionality awaits an amendment to the Identity Documents Act, which is expected to reach a government session soon.
The development included important security and accessibility considerations. Pakosta highlighted the data tracker feature as particularly significant, allowing users to monitor who has accessed their information. “This ensures that if someone notices a party has viewed their data, they have questions about, they can follow up,” she said.
RIA’s deputy director general for state information systems, Taavi Ploompuu, noted that the app’s development was driven by increasing mobile usage of the state portal. Estonians, who file taxes and open new businesses fully online, will now save even more time on bureaucracy. And with no risk to their data, the country ranks first globally in Government Cybersecurity.
Pakosta noted that a translation tool is in development that will allow e-residents and other users to access state services in additional languages. “Once the security testing is completed, the Estonia app will be usable in any language convenient for the user, as the translation tool will translate materials into the desired language,” she said. Over the years, e-residents have crossed 100,000, with record numbers in 2024.
The application is available for download through both App Store and Google Play.
