When Fred retired two years ago, he made himself a promise: From that day on he would spend his valuable time doing the things he loves most - fishing, gardening and visiting his grandkids.
What he didn't count on was developing asthma.
It was a severe case, but his doctor told him he should be fine as long as he used an inhaler whenever an attack came on.
At first, Fred was worried that his condition would mean days spent – or wasted, as he thought of it – setting up appointments with his doctor and riding into the city every time he needed his prescription refilled.
But then Fred started using the new e-prescription system Estonia has set up. Now all Fred has to do is have his doctor log onto the system and, with a couple of mouse clicks, approve his refills. When Fred presents his ID card at his local pharmacy – or any pharmacy – his information is checked and he gets his medicine. No paperwork, no forms, no doctor visits. It's that simple.
Every day he's saved with the help of e-prescription, Fred is spending either entertaining the kids or casting for trout. He wouldn't have it any other way.
